Language boards

I was thinking of how impressed I was with Waldorf's form drawings when it occurred to me that our two IKEA easels have blackboards on the reverse sides that we barely use. And then there's the box of Pang chalk in storage, along with three small hand-sized slate boards I had thrifted long ago...

No, it's not as aesthetically pleasing as form drawings, (someday?) but it works for us. I write our monthly Bible verse, a few vocabulary words that we are struggling to learn, and riddles! When I was in fourth grade, Ms. Harris used to write a riddle on the blackboard each morning and we had the whole day to figure it out. My kids really love riddles these days. And Koko is loving writing, tracing, and rewriting on the boards as well.

My husband also purchased a self-stick dry erase board that he affixed on a kitchen cabinet wall. There he originally wrote my incorrect verb conjugations with the corrected versions. Unfortunately, seeing the incorrect version first reinforced our bad habits, so now he only writes the correct form.

And an unexpected plus from all these boards? The girls are so enjoying writing these day. I even caught Koko doing some "copywork" of a verse appa had wrote in a poster in the bedroom. Cheeky is writing individual letters and becoming more eager to join this writing community soon! And even the baby loves to scribble on his slate while the girls write on theirs.

We never use the blackboard side either. I guess we will now!
