I recently had something of a science book bug. I was fascinated with this nature series (more pictures here)for its simplicity and conversational style. I thought it would be perfect my my youngest two year old budding nature lover and growing conversationalist. I was also a little interested with this Tan Tan's Nature series, but I think it's a little too fancy for my liking. 한솔북스북스플러스 과학빛그림책 (close up pics of one book here) is a translated series from Japan. The content is engaging for little ones, and Eggy loves the pictures. I like that it's easily found in thrift stores and in paperback so it's not too heavy to ship. I think when my oldest is around ten, I would definitely think of purchasing the Why series. It not only covers science, but history, art, etc. in comic form. I have a friend who was a science major and she tells me the information is accurate and presented well for young learners. I really try to follow the principles presented in Simplicity Parenting in limiting the amount of books in the children's library, but these great books are making it awfully hard!

Korean science books
My Korean friends and I sometimes marvel at the growth of the children's book industry in Korea. While individual books are still marketed on their individual basis, publishing companies work hard to advertise books series or collections of 20-100 books based on various themes and collections. Some fictional collection will contain individual hardcover award winning books. Sometimes the publishing company will create a series following a specific theme such as art, math stories, nature observation, science story tales, world classics, Korean folktales, etc. An American equivilent might be the series Getting to Know the World's Greatest Artists. Most Korean mothers have their tiny apartment crammed with thousands and thousands of books.

They look so good, I want to get all of them. But so expensive!
I know. I think it's worth begging a relative from Korea and shipping it by boat..
