BPA has been receiving a lot of press these days. After I chucked all my Avent bottles, I tried to eliminate other sources of BPA. It turns out that the epoxy lining of most canned foods have BPA in it. Thankfully, my family doesn't consume a lot of canned foods, but in my effort to lower my BPA exposure, I found some easy alternatives.
I was happy to find out that the Eden brand, with the exception of tomato products are not lined with BPA. Unfortunately, I only use canned foods for whole tomatoes, tomato paste, and tomato sauce. So what are my alternatives to canned tomato products? These are some of my easy solutions:
For tomato sauce, chopped tomatoes, and the like, try the brands that are packaged with tetra boxes. So far, I haven't seen any whole tomatoes in this type of packaging, but most recipes calls for the other varieties of tomatoes, so it's not that bad.
Now for tomato paste, try the Amore brand in a tube. A delightful surprise, this brand turns out to highly recommended by America's Test Kitchen. And as far as I know, since it's not a can, but a tube, it should be BPA-free, but to be on the safe side, I am still waiting for a response on my inquiry of their product packaging.
Recently, in my trip to Whole Foods, I did see some tomato sauce in glass bottles. I haven't tried any yet, but I will be sure to post my findings after I try them later.
