Seed Wreaths

On your next nature walk, collect seeds of various kinds such as pine cones, berries, and milkweed pods and glue them to paper wreaths. We also used beans and corn kernels. I bet this would have been prettier had we colored the paper plates green.  I had not realized how beautiful the different berries are outside.I even found some ellipsoid ones!  Some fun books to read along with this activity are A Seed is Sleepy, A Fruit is a Suitcase for Seeds, and the fictional book Miss Hickory which my children and I adored.

I can't take credit for this wonderful project. My husband's seminary has a great nature center with many nature classes for children and this was one of many activities they did this past fall.  It's been definitely a wonderful place to visit this school year. I had been attending nature classes at a faraway location never knowing that there was this place close by!

Good point! The consonant names sound similar to the sounds so teaching the names shouldn't be a problem. I stuck with the sounds because it worked really well in English in terms of sounding out words. I know kids can get confused with letter names when trying to sound out words. But I see your point about writing and spelling. Whenever I ask JC to spell a word, she tells me the sounds and it's nearly impossible for me to figure out what she's spelling! I've started to use the letter names in English and now she's learning both but she still prefers the sounds since she learned it first.

I don't think JC is a genius but she does catches on things quickly! :)

I saw a video on utube where a woman did the vowels by acting them out. I thought that was helpful, especially for kinesthetic learners.

I didn't get the comment on the cloud bread series. What was it about?

I've been watching Secret Garden. SO funny!
