Color Mixing

Koko had been asking, "Does red and yellow make purple?" and other related color mixing questions so I thought we needed a formal introduction.

After we thoroughly experimented with the Wonder Years's Color Bottles Intro to Mixing Colors, we used the color bottles to predict what colors we could create. This activity works really well in bright light near a window.

Here's the setup for the actual coloring mixing with eyedroppers. I gave each child a small cup of water to clean their dropper after they were done mixing.

Koko used the color bottles during this whole activity to make predictions and then go on to make new colors.

She discovered that red + yellow= orange
blue +yellow=orange
blue+red=purple

Also, that other combinations either made different shades of individual colors or...just muddy brown. Cheeky, on the other hand, was just trying to get used to the medicine eyedropper I gave her. I am kind of annoyed because I can't locate my turkey baster and big syringe which would have been much easier for Cheeky to maneuver.

* Note: I poured boiling water inside the glass bottles because I read in some blog (I thought from this one, but I can't locate it) that it would help remove labels easily. It did for some, but not with all. (I ended up using steel wool for some.) Still, it might be worth a shot!
