Nature Journaling with Koko

This journal kind of just happened. It started with my big idea to go outside with a thermometer to gauge the weather daily to reinforce her learning of two digit numbers and just get in touch with the daily rhythms in nature. But then I started adding some notes on some of her nature observations such as the caterpillar she fell in love with at the nature center and was so saddened that we couldn't bring home until she could concede that the caterpillar would be happier in the forest.

She became curious with what I was writing and would ask me to read what I wrote. I started adding a few pictures. For example, I drew the caterpillar. And beyond her nature observations, I would add some of the things she and Cheeky were saying or doing so that I wouldn't forget and write in more detail for their baby journals (I have one for each kid and need to start one for the baby soon!). Once, I wrote about how she was having a bad day complete with a picture of her crying with tears and that acted as a catalyst to further discussion that ended with an affirmation on how much we, her parents love her.

Some days she's not so excited about bringing the thermometer outside and checking with me so I try to just go with the flow but be as consistent as possible. And as this journal is constantly evolving, she is taking more ownership and I hope it will be more of a dictation.
