For those who have read my blog from its humble beginnings, you might have recalled the numerous times I have expressed longing for an organic mattress. So, did I finally get one? No, but something close.
On that fateful day, my husband encouraged me to spurge on some expensive organic moisturizers (For those curious, I was going to buy some Saaf products), I thought of what I could buy with this money that could benefit my children. And yes, I decided to buy Naturepedic's No-Compromise organic waterproof mattress cover. My cheap waterproof covers have ripped to shreds by my washing machine and with Cheeky who is not yet potty-trained at night sleeping next to me, I found this occasion a good excuse to finally bust out and buy this cover. And since, we do want to have another baby in the near future, I wanted to reduce my exposure to flame retardants for my future pregnancy. After all, we do spend many hours in our bed.
I originally bought a cover for Koko's toddler bed, (she sleeps on my bed 90% of the time) but the husband did protest a little too much, and I canceled that portion of the order. The queen-sized cover is expensive at $139 but it's significantly cheaper than an actual mattress.
This cover is made of undyed and unbleached organic cotton and unlike my previous quilted cotton that had crinkly vinyl, it is completely smooth, seamless, and super thin which makes sleeping more comfortable. It has straps to hold it down versus pockets because it is a flat pad (not fitted). It's machine washable (it washes beautifully) and since it's completely encased front and back with cotton, I don't foresee any future problems with ripping. This is not a flimsy cheap cover. It looks and feels sturdy. Best of all, it's breathable and it works! We switched to cloth diapers full-time and though my toddler has had leaks at night, my bed is dry and protected. However, one time my gal slept on the far edge of the bed (actually, on the crevice between the bed and wall) and since the cover is not fitted, the deep corner of the bed did get a little wet. But that was the first day we used the cover and though the husband disagrees, I think it was because he didn't put the straps on the cover. Since then, we've never had a problem.
I did ask if they could tell me what percentage it could protect me from the flame retardants in my bed and they couldn't give me a definitive answer. However, they did say it does protect against some because it serves as a barrier. If you can afford an organic mattress, by all means, I would recommend one. But if you're looking for a cheaper alternative, this organic mattress pad might be for you.
Inside Tip: If you buy a mattress from them, they will ship it for free. But for mattress covers and such, you can actually negotiate the shipping charges.
