Thankful Thursday

:: Children do have nightmares sometimes, but oh, the sound of Cheeky giggling in her sleep!

:: I watch with bemusement as Koko automatically puts her wet mittens on the floor next to the heater vents to dry them. Just like I do. These days, I am on her case to put items away, but it's funny how the lessons that stick are taught by mere example.

:: I just realized that my kids have not been sick once this winter. So does this make up for Cheeky going to the doctor every two weeks last year this time?

:: There seems to be an endless supply of apple cider and honey crisp apples here. In Chicago, they stop coming out by November. Seedless clementines have also been on sale. Winter is not winter to me without clementines. My kids have been gobbling them up with me in bed. What if my family detested them? I remember one of my students protesting against the aroma of tangerine that filled my immediate vicinity during lunchtime.

:: The return of heat and the kind new friends who checked up on me when the pilot light went out on our ancient heater. I was by myself with two young children, a little frightened and not knowing what to do, but having people to call and ask for advice in this still new place was reassuring. I want to kiss the feet of all my friends who recommended getting the home warranty insurance. Also, I couldn't have survived 12 hours without heat if it wasn't for the electric heater we brought from Chicago "just in case."

: Of late, I've been remembering encouraging words my brain has recorded from the past. Even though we do go out often, I do spend the majority of my hours by myself with young kids and sometimes I get burnt out and down. But this week, words from a dear friend spoken all the way back in high school reiterated in the recesses of my mind: "Jesus is the reason why I get up every morning." These simple words keep me afloat on my down days.

:: Scripture that is ministering to me, especially in these past weeks when childhood friends have suffered from miscarriages and other hardships:

Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines,
though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food,
though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls,
yet I will rejoice in the Lord,
I will be joyful in God my Savior.

Habakkuk 3:17-18

So, what has been the highlight of your week?

I still haven't relit a pilot light all by myself (and who knows about shutting off the water and all that), so I've got lots to learn. Just one thing, though: recheck the post title.
