I've received a request to write on safer dishware for children and so I would like to direct you to check out the super-handy Safe Mama's Safer Dishware Cheatsheet: BPA, PVC & Phthalate Free Dishes.
Make sure to check out her link to the Soft Landing On-line store as well. It only sells non-toxic baby items and you can find many widely available brands that can be noted and then easily bought in a Target type store yourself. I would buy more items directly there if they offered free shipping but their $5 shipping fee deters me most of the time. However, they have these spill-resistant (not spill-proof) Nuby Tumblers that I've been eyeing that are not available anywhere else. And I've just realized that using the coupon code offered from Safe Mama's, I can get a 10% discount on my purchases. Hmmm....
Please be aware that several of these mass-production companies ie. Sassy and now Bright Starts have been caught lying about their bpa-free status. So, go through the trouble and call individual companies to confirm that your kid's items are indeed bpa and phthalate free.
Also, Safbaby had a informative post about lead found in ceramic dinnerware. In addition, Wild in the City has done some research in this particular area that might be helpful for those who are curious about the lead content in their current ceramic dinnerware.
My own two cents on this matter: I try to avoid plastic with my children. I use these unbreakable tempered glass bowls for most of their food although I do use plastic IKEA cups and clearly marked #5 Rubbermaid sport bottles. (Apparently, Rubbermaid also makes an identical sports bottle that does contain BPA) Since all plastic does leach to some degree, I do handwash my cups with cold water and mild dish detergent and am looking into stainless steel water bottles for my family. ZRecommends first mentioned and reviewed Thinkbaby's new innovative dishware that features a stainless steel interior and a polypropylene exterior and now the Soft Landing carries it. It's worth a look.
If you do give your children plastic dinnerware, please remember that all plastic, even those claimed to be microwaveable is not deemed safe to be heated in any form. Helpful Tip: You can microwave in a safe ceramic dish (I use Corelle without painted garnishes) or Cornish Hen and cover with either another plate or a wet paper towel/towel and it heats up just as well. I would avoid contact between super hot food and plastic dinnerware as well.

Good commentary around the links presented.
Question for ya: what about warming up food in a non-plastic bowl covered with plastic wrap (that's been used zero, one, or two times in this manner) that doesn't touch the food?
And as far as a blog name is concerned, so was "Cheeky Mama" just too "cheeky" (and maybe not enough koko)?
Thank you..... This is a lot to consider. Where do you get the tempered glass bowls, IKEA?
