Mama Knows Best: Kid-friendly Chewable Acidophilus

Even before probiotics because the rage, my mother, who swore off medicine unless absolutely necessary, gave us good ole' acidophilus whenever the flora of our stomachs was out of wack. So when we had a tummy ache from the water overseas, or indigestion from traveling, or any type of suspected food poisoning symptoms, she would give us some type of acidophilus tablet to swallow, and we would feel okay.

Fast forward a few years when I become a mother and my own kids are having major diarrhea from the flu or side effects from antibiotics. The kids' pediatrician gives me a prescription for Florastor, Saccharomyces boulardii lyo, "The #1 Probiotic Worldwide" and tells me open half the capsule of this grain-like good bacteria and hide it in my children's applesauce. My kids are not fooled. I give it a sample, and it tastes like death. So my next visit to my mom, I check her stash in the refrigerator (apparently, after you open it, some varieties need to be refrigerated, and the expensive brands you buy refrigerated prior to opening) to find Nature Bounty Chewable ACIDOPHILUS with Bifidus, Natural Strawberry flavor"providing one billion microorganisms per wafer at the time of manufacture."

I tell you these wafers are delicious. My kids beg for these wafers daily. Every kid I've introduced this to thinks it's candy. Well, that's because the other ingredients like sucrose and fructose make it sweet.

Nature Bounty is very affordable, especially the buy one, get one free deals at CVS. Other good probiotic choices for young ones are yogurt and Kefir, which is like drinkable yogurt and is both delicious and healthy.

So, there you have it. A little belated, but a nod of thanks to my mama in honor of Mother's Day who did know what was good and healthy for us even back them in the ice age.
