Conversations with Koko

Conversation #1

(Looking at our family portrait with my husband's side of the family)

Koko: Where am I?
Me: In my belly.
Koko: Where's Cheeky?
Me: She's not in my belly yet.
Koko: Pause. Oh, is she in daddy's belly?

Conversation #2

(Looking at my wedding picture)
Koko: Mom, how come you are dressed like a princess?
Me: Because daddy and I were getting married.
Koko: Is that something (special) like Christmas?

Conversation # 3
(Looking at my big belly while I attempt to demonstrate deep diaphragmatic breathing)
Koko: How come your belly is so big?
Me: Uh...
Koko: Is there a baby there?
Me: No, mommy is just a bit chubby there.
Koko: Why don't you buy a baby?
Me: Buy it from a store?
Koko: No, buy it in your belly.
Me: ?
Koko: A tiny baby girl for me to hug.
Me: You mean a doll?
Koko: No, a real baby.
Me: How about a baby boy?
Koko: No! A baby girl like Cheeky.
Me: But if we had another baby, who would carry you? Sometimes you get mad when I have to carry Cheeky instead of you. It would be harder with another baby.
Koko: (Pause. You can just tell that she's thinking about it.)

Conversation #4
(The next day)
Koko: Mom, you carry Cheeky, dad can carry the baby boy, I can carry the baby girl.
Me: So you want me to have a baby boy and a baby girl?
Koko: Oh yes!
Me: You want me to have twins?
Koko: Uh huh.
Me: And who is going to carry you?
Koko: I don't need to be carried anymore. I have to carry the baby girl.
