The commercial play doughs are made with undisclosed ingredients and synthetic dyes. They sell organic play dough, but why not make your own? It's fast, cheap, and easy--my reigning mantra when it comes to kids' crafts. Today morning I made play dough and it only took me five minutes. I do confess that I'm a lazy gal and just mixed up all the ingredients instead of following directions, but it still turned out fine!
I actually used the recipe in First Art, but I found this organic play dough recipe that's pretty much identical. I did not use food coloring because I'm lazy. But in the future where I might venture to do so, since synthetic food dye is deemed unsafe for consumption, perhaps I should be on the safe side and look hither for other alternatives. So far, in my google searches, I've discovered International Foodcraft Corporation, Nature's Flavors, and for those people who actually bother with icing, here's some natural food dye recipes for baking goodies. Amazon also presumingly has some offerings as well.
If anyone out there knows of a good prepackaged natural food dye that you have personally tried, please let me know! In the meantime, I must find some other preservative and dye-free cereals that actually taste good because my kiddies are crazy for preservative and dye laden Blueberry Shredded Mini-wheats A.K.A. "Yummy Blue Cereal."
And I might want to try this fun and easy activity to use up the rest of the food dye that I have!
